Teachers know that it is critical to begin the school year with a solid parent-teacher relationship. Your best opportunity to establish this is at the Parent Teacher Night. These events allow parents and teachers to get to know each other at the beginning of the school year.
The following checklist will help you prepare for this very important night. Remember this is your first opportunity to leave a good impression with the parents.
First, have your credentials, particularly any awards and certificates, in a visible place. This is no time to be modest!
Doctors and dentists almost always have their degrees and certifications proudly displayed in their offices. Why would you, as a teacher, be any different? The parents will want to know your credentials, and displaying them is a great way to let them know what you have done.
You may want to be prepared to give a short synopsis of your background, training, and experience to the parents. They will want to know who they are meeting with, and more importantly, who will be teaching their kids!
While parents will be naturally curious about your background and credentials, they can’t be expected to do their own research, as they most likely do not have the time nor the access to your background needed to do so. Therefore it is up to you – they may only know what you reveal to them. Stick to the main points that add value to your ability to educate their children, and avoid irrelevant details that can take up precious time.
Today’s parents will want to be confident that their children will be able to keep up with modern technology. You’ll need to demonstrate that you are very comfortable using and teaching technology, even if you have a more traditional subject to teach.
Once the parents know that you are confident, qualified, and passionate, they’ll leave the evening proud to have you teach their kids!
